The Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation hosted the eighth annual Wine, Women and Fishing ladies-only charity billfish tournament on August 14-15th to benefit Eastern Virginia Medical School’s breast cancer research. A record thirty-three boats and 200 female anglers participated in the release billfish tournament. Joining forces with the Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament, the festivities took place under the festival tent at “The View” at Southside Marina, thanks to the generosity of property owners and supports, Cheryl and Wayne McLeskey.
This year’s tournament was a success in the water, with 45 white marlin, five blue marlin, and one spearfish caught and released. The winning team, Tippecanoe, scored 1100 points, followed by Special D in second place and Backlash in third. This year’s”Crazy Crew” contest was won by the women on the Canyon Express and the Top Lady Angler honors were awarded to Deborah Stearns on the Tippecanoe.Â
Wine, Women & Fishing is held each year by the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation with proceeds benefiting the Eastern Virginia Medical School breast cancer research efforts. WWF has raised more than $150,000 for EVMS and on hand to thank the participants was Harry Lester, President of EVMS. The tournament was followed by a party highlighted by music from Guava Jam.Â
We enthusiastically thank everyone who participated in the tournament, especially the anglers, the captains and mates and our wonderful volunteers. Farm Fresh, Cheryl and Wayne McLeskey, The Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament, Associated Distributors/The Charmer Sunbelt Group and Hoffman Beverage Company were some of the very generous sponsors and we appreciate their continued support.Â
