A joint venture between the Varner and Neely families in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this wine, which is a blend of blocks of Chardonnay from the Varner’s Spring Ridge Vineyard, is a limited cuvee with undeniable minerality, lots of lemon oil, and honeyed citrus in a medium to full-bodied wine, with terrific fruit purity and expression. Peter Michael La Carriere Chardonnay 2006
This wine displays wonderful honeyed grapefruit and some spicy, yeasty notes along with nectarine and honeyed citrus. It is rich, full-bodied, with a striking minerality. RP 92 (2 bottles)
Shafer Red Shoulder Chardonnay 2006
One of Napa’s most prominent and respected wineries, Shafer is a poster boy for remarkable and consistent quality across the board. All of this is the work of the brilliant father and son team of John and Doug Shafer as well as their long-term winemaker and vineyard manager, Elias Fernandez. This wine is medium to full-bodied with notes of honeyed pineapple, nectarine, and some spice, the wine exhibits good acidity, purity, and plenty of length. RP 92 (2 bottles)
Aubert Richie Vineyard Chardonnay 2007
In only a handful of years, Mark Aubert, who received impeccable training at Peter Michael winery, working under Helen Turley, as well as at Colgin and Bryant Family Vineyards, has produced mind-boggling wines under his own label. This wine reveals superb minerality and acidity, a laser-like precision, a light green/straw color, a steely, full-bodied mouthfeel, and plenty of orange blossom, lemon oil, creme brulee, and honeysuckle notes. Plumpjack Reserve Chardonnay 2008
This twelfth release has been made in a style that emphasizes and respects the flavor of the terroir from the vineyards. These grapes are sourced, by Garvey Ranch in Rutherford and a small amount of Chardonnay from the Carneros region of Napa Valley. Winemaker Anthony Biagi thinks the 2008 vintage continues to deliver flavors in a similar profile of vintages past but with a hint of more richness marked by the vintage. In the glass, primary flavors of baked apple, Bartlett pear, and banana give way to flavors of pineapple, guava, apple cobbler and cinnamon spice cake. In its youth, this wine posses striking acidity and after a year or two of bottle aging you can expect the toasty rich butterscotch flavors to reveal themselves. (2 bottles)
DuMol Chardonnay 2006
Proprietor Kerry Murphy and his winemaker, Andy Smith, are doing sensational work in the cool-climate areas of the Russian River. This is a winery that is clearly on top of its game and pushing all the right buttons in terms of quality. With plenty of honeysuckle, citrus oil, mineral, and hazelnut, this wine is ripe, fleshy, and altogether a delicious example of this varietal. RP 93 (1 bottle)
DuMol Isobel Chardonnay 2005
This wine has a greenish hue to its yellow straw color. The wine smells fabulous, with notes of tropical fruits, honeyed citrus and a touch of roasted hazelnut, A wine of great intensity, full-bodied power, but extraordinary structure and length, this is a sensational Chardonnay. RP 96 (1 bottle)
DuMol Isobel Chardonnay 2006
Very exotic notes of tropical fruits, pineapple, and mango, in addition to honeysuckle, make for a vivid aromatic expression. This full-bodied wine displays excellent fruit purity, nicely layered mouthfeel, and a long finish. RP 94(1 bottle)
DuMol Chloe Chardonnay 2005
The wine comes from the well-known Ritchie Vineyard, the source for some unbelievable Chardonnays in California, and it makes a nice contrast to the Isobel, which comes from the Heintz Vineyard, or the Clare, which comes from the Hyde Vineyard. This is a sensational Chardonnay with great minerality, a light greenish-hued gold color, and a stunning nose of orange blossoms, guava, nectarine, honeysuckle, and lemon oil. The wine displays white currant and floral notes, super full body, and superb structure due to the acidity level. RP 95 (1 bottle)
DuMol Chloe Chardonnay 2006
This wine has taken on a little more of an earthy note, with hints of marmalade, peach, and nectarine, full body, and terrific fruit. This is a successful, serious Chardonnay. RP 92 (1 bottle)
