Graham’s 1985
Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. RP 96
Warre’s 1994
One of the finest Warre’s, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port. RP 94
Smith Woodhouse 1983
Very impressive for its brute strength; a very deep, dark ruby, with a concentrated cassis nose, full bodied, rich, powerful and overflowing with fruit flavors and hard tannins. WS 92
Smith Woodhouse 1994
Smith-Woodhouse has turned out a port with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color. This powerful port is moderately sweet, forward, rich, and full-bodied, with nicely integrated alcohol and tannin. RP 90
Sandeman 1977
Dark ruby-garnet with a very floral nose, this wine has loads of berry character and hints of custard pie. It is full-bodied and medium-sweet, with a wonderful mouthfeel. Smooth and caressing, with lots of fruit. It has a complex finish of strawberry, coffee and custard. WS 91
Sandeman 1994
Big and grapey with loads of sweet fruit flavor, though slightly roasted. Full-bodied.
Quinta do Noval 1985
The 1985 is quite concentrated, seductive, and amazingly delicious. The finish is long and flavorful.
Quinta do Noval 1978
Quinta do Noval is a historic property and a beautiful one. It sits atop one of the most picturesque spots in Portugal’s rustic Douro River Valley, actually just above a tributary known as the Pinhão River. Noval is known as a top notch producer of Port as well as for their pristine vineyards and charming Quinta.
